Viken Folk High School

We are a music school for people who want a further education in music or have music as their hobby. The classes are adapted to the level of the individual students, and we emphasize practice opportunities and ensemble play. You will receive instruction in a self-selected main instrument, and many of the teachers are practicing musicians. We recommend  that you gain some knowledge of Norwegian before you get here. Our experience is that students who do not speak very much Norwegian, quickly become integrated into school life, because music is an inclusive form of communication that break down barriers.

LOCAL SURROUNDINGS Viken Folk High School is situated about 2 km south of downtown Gjøvik. The school campus reach right up to Lake Mjøsa, so close that we can hear the waves hit the shore and see the sunrise reflected in the water. With its own culture, Gjøvik is of special interest for music students. There is an sctive musical community here, which includes the Community Music School and secondary education with major in music. The town also has its own orchestra. This creates an excellent basis for cooperations with teachers, and the local community.

LIFE AT A BOARDING SCHOOL A school where all the students live on campus is ideal for musicians. To put it another way, you don't have to go very far to get to practices! We are close to another all day long. There are meals, classes, meeting, social activities in the dorms, and so on. But the music has a central place in all of this. We have larger arrangements, which we will be preparing for, and there will be tours and road trips as well.

CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Viken is a Christian Music Folk High School. For those who want to take part in Christian activities and meetings, this will be possible. Some of the students are confirmed Christians, others are not.

CONCERTS Each year the school arranges concerts using both its own resources and occasionally also works with musicians outside the school. The students also frequently arrange concerts for each other, and there are several concerts given by the choirs at the school.

ROOMS AND LIVING CONDITIONS There is a room in the dormitory that will be your home for 33 weeks. We offer mainly double rooms. The single rooms, of which we have only a few, are quite small. All students are required to live on campus.

CHURCH MUSIC learn to play church organ

JAZZ / POP / ROCK play in a band. For those who have done i earlier.

BAND play in a band. For those who can play an instrument and now want to play with others.

MUSICAL music, dance and drama

MUSIC THERAPY use music to make people communicate and express themselves

SOUND  work with sound, both on the stage and in the studio.

VOCAL sing with an a cappella-group



COMMON SUBJECTS: Ear training / theory of music, history of music, physical education, reading lessons, "value exchange", school choir.

SUBJECTS FOR SELECTION: Chamber choir, drama, gospel choir, music therapy, outdoor life, arrangement, ensembles (wooden, brass or string instruments), communication/marketing
